Compositor:

. “ The American Bison “

Though written for larger drum section, this group was able to convey the underlying message quite nicely.

I appreciate the attention to detail of all concerned.

The Great Savanna of what is now the present day United States was once the domain of over 60 million bisons. A creature so magnificently adapted to its environment, a symbolic vision of the power of the plains. The native people knew and appreciated the awesome power of this beautiful beast. It fed them, housed them, clothed them, and inspired them.

When the transcontinental rails came through, mighty herds of them may take many hours to pass.
They were wantonly slaughtered for “ sport “ and profit and meanness and greed. A shameful episode of the past. Animals to modern man always seem to take a back seat in his way of thinking. Relegated to token zoos and small reserves.
A creature which doesn’t hibernate in brutal winter conditions. But uses it massive neck muscles and skeletal structures to plow deep snow away to reveal dried grassy nutrients beneath. Months on end of wind and sub zero temperatures,, even then the fallen feed other creatures. The promise of spring and new life around the bend. The Old Lead Bull had seen many such cycles, till he too must return to the prairie that sustained him.

Gone but not forgotten.

If there ever was a song that best describes music, Dances With Wolves, it is this song; to include the melody, harmony, key, metre and rhythm. Each element is speaking loudly, then softly, fast then slow, to the others in a way that draws one into its arms, causing one's emotions to a blissful state. The pitches of highs and lows in this music are organised in such a way that is perfect for the ears, the heart and soul of the listeners. A beautiful and wonderful piece of music, that complements each element in its arrangement. Though cannot see John Barry in the movie, he is there through his arrangements every second of this wonderful movie and through all his arrangements within as well.
